NY/NJ Trip Day 4: Little Italy and Empire State Building
On our way to the Empire State Building we went to Little Italy and walked down the street to all of the Italian Restaraunts to see which one had the best prices and what we wanted to eat. There were so many choices to choose from. We chose a little place that was pictured in the last slide show. It was really good food. As we were leaving we had one of the waiters walk out with us and he stood there and talked to us for 15-20 mins about Russia (where he is from) and how different things are there versus there. It was kind of neat. Then off to the Empire State Building we went. When we got there we thought there was going to be this big huge line. We were told that there was always a line to go up to the observatory deck. We walked right in, up the escalator and up up and away we went. We went through a hall to get our tickets, then through a security check, then we were offered an audio tour. 2 for the price of one, so we did it. I am so glad that we did becuase it had so much information about what is around the city around it, and where things are located, and the history of the building. It was really neat to have a history lesson right then and there on it. You can see out about 5 states from the Observatory on the 86th floor of the ESB. It talked about Ellis Island and how Chinatown and Litle Italy came about. Then to where Central Park was, all about the Library and the Museum of Natural History, then on into little tid bits of information that you would have never known otherwise. I really wanted to buy the audio for it once we were down in the gift shop, but it was expensive and I didn't want to spend that much. We also had a map to show us where everything was located and that really helped out to. Now I have that map to add to our scrapbook of the trip to keep all of the memories fresh. It was really neat being up there and seeing everything. The ESB was the tallest building in the US for 40 years. Then the Twin Towers were built and they were the tallest until this day 8 years ago, and then the ESB became the tallest again. The Twin Towers were something like 300 ft taller than the ESB. Those towers stuck out like a sore thumb. No wonder they were such a target. When we got home we went onto youtube and watched the crashes again and watched the death and destruction and the fear of all of the people around that day. Just makes me SICK!!!! It was so cold while we were up there. The wind was blowing like crazy, so matt and I would hop back inside listen to the audio number we were standing in front of and then go out and take some pics and then come back in. It worked, and we didn't freeze so bad. It's amazing the higher you get the colder it gets. And they say hot/warm air rises! HA! LOL! We finished there and went to the Gift Shop. They were having a sale, but everything was still WAY to pricey so we found a puzzle that has all of the facts of the ESB on it for like $3 and added it to our collection of stuff to take home. Off to the hotel we went after that to head to bed cause we had to be up early to get the harbor for our ferry ride to Ellis Island and to the Statue of Liberty. We were really exicted for that.
